BAPI Means Business

What does The New York Times have to do with Best Buy? Or Intuit and ESPN? Maybe USA Today and Twilio?

The easy answer is that they are among the companies you’ll find represented at the annual Business of APIs (BAPI) conference, the premier global forum for API experts and professionals. The conference will be in the Julia Morgan Ballroom at Merchants Exchange in San Francisco on Oct., 360 Degrees in New York on Oct. 17 and Altitude 360 - 29th Floor at Millibank Tower in London on Nov. 6.

What they also have in common is that they’re among the true innovators in this field. They are in a variety of different fields, but even those that have overlapping products and services or similar target markets, are guided by their own distinct business priorities rather than broad concerns. Some may be looking for new channels to do what they’ve always done while others are embarking on entirely new ventures. Some work completely in their own sphere while others can only function in a vibrant partners’ network. Some need to defend their existing turf while others are comfortable straying into uncharted territory.

That’s why they’re coming to BAPI, and you should too. A good API strategy—followed by equally good execution—offers the most flexible platform anyone’s seen in a long time for not only building on existing business models but also expanding into new markets. And as with every emerging channel (someone please call me when we can finally say it’s actually emerged), there are new possibilities becoming apparent every day.

We know you’re busy, and that the best reason for coming to events like this is to network on the company dime. BAPI will offer plenty of time and opportunity to do that. But the events are pretty good too. Rather than long, static presentations, we’ve developed a series of shorter sessions of core subjects that are integral to the business of APIs.

In the morning, we’ve set up API University 2012, with courses on API management and security, strategies to achieve business goals, and ways to generate developer interest and activity in your platform. The information and materials provided is not just comprehensible and concise, it’s also easy to pass on to colleagues.

In the afternoon it gets even more relaxed, with bite-size sessions around business development, developer evangelism and brand engagement. Not trying to change the world here, just offer some tools to new things in new ways.

There’s no question that API management requires a learning curve. Some have been on it longer than others and we can learn from them and from each other. Meeting with industry leaders in a convivial setting is the best way to do that. Join us.
